American tennis star John Isner has confirmed he will skip the upcoming Australian Open due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Isner, 35, said Monday that he wanted his family to travel together to “make it as fun as possible on the road,” but added that this year would be impossible due to the global pandemic.

He lost to fellow countryman Sebastian Korda 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Delray Beach Open on Monday.

The Australian Open will be held from February 8-21, three weeks ahead of schedule.

The grand slam was previously scheduled to begin January 18, but the schedule was updated last month due to Covid-19 restrictions.

A shortened version of the ATP Cup men’s team tournament takes place in Melbourne from February 1 to 5 before the Australian Open starts on February 8.
