To become a certified pharmacy technician, take the PCBT exam. To take the examination, you must:

  • Disclose of all criminal and licensure actions the State Board of Pharmacy takes.
  • Comply with all applicable PTCB certification policies.
  • Have a  high school diploma or GED.
  • Have a passing score in the Pharmacy Technicians Certification Exam (PTCE).

Steps for Taking the PTCB Examination

Step 1: Review the PTCB Candidate Bulletin and all of the information contained in the document.

Step 2: Ensure you have met all eligibility requirements to take the PTCB examination by reviewing the eligibility requirements listed on the PTCB website.

Step 3: Register with PTCB online. Read and agree to the confidentiality agreement to complete your registration.

Step 4: Fill out the application and pay the $129 application fee. You will receive a confirmation email if your application is received.

Step 5: After paying the fee and applying for the certification examination, you will receive an “authorization to test letter.” This letter will tell you when and how to schedule your test and provide other details related to the exam.

Step 6: Set a schedule for the PTCB exam appointment within 90 days of receiving your ATT letter. 

Step 7: After you receive your authorization to schedule an email from PTCB, schedule your PTCE appointment using your PTCB account or call Pearson Vue at 866-902-0593. To plan, visit, click Login, and choose PTCB Certification Exams. Sign in.

Step 8:  You may take the exam at a chosen location and time as long as you register for the exam first. PTCE is a two-hour multiple-choice test comprising 90 questions (80 scored and ten unscored questions). The exam offers you a total of 3 hours to complete the 90 questions. 

Step 9: If you pass the exam, your official score report will be available on your PTCB Account within three weeks of your exam date.
