What is an RJ45 Connector

RJ stands for Registered Jack, so called because it was originally a registered trademark. The RJ-45 connector is a type of 8P8C modular connector. It is for terminating twisted pair cables, typically in Ethernet networks. The plug has eight pins arranged in two rows of four pins each. In LAN networks, you will see the RJ45 connectors all the time. When you connect your computer or laptop with ethernet cables or patch cables, you are essentially plugging in RJ45 connectors.

Types of RJ45 Connectors

There are many types of RJ45 connectors, but the two most common ones are 8P8C modular plugs and 6P6C modular plugs. Both 8P8C and 6P6C modular plugs come in both straight-through and crossover varieties.

The difference between the two is that straight-through RJ45s plug into a port on one side of the cable, while crossover cables plug into ports on opposite sides of the cable.

Straight-through cables are for connections between workstations or computers, while crossover cables are typically run when connecting a computer with a switch or router.

RJ45 Wiring and Pinout

As mentioned earlier, there are two basic types of RJ-45 connectors: eight-position (8P8C) and six-position (6P6C). The 6P6C connector is sometimes also referred to as modular or M. Both types are for different cable types and have different wiring pinouts that describe how they connect electrically.

When it comes to terminating an RJ-45 connector, there are two different methods that you can choose from depending on the type of network you’re connecting it to. The first method is called crimping. With this method, the wires are stripped away from the shielding to make contact with the pins inside the connector.

Next, a specialized tool called a crimping tool is used (much like pliers) to clamp down on the wires until they form a secure connection with the pins inside.

Tools Required

  1. Jack Plug Crimping Tool – This tool is used to crimp a plug onto the end of a wire. This is the tool that you’ll use for the bulk of your terminations.
  2. RJ45 Socket-Outline Tool – This tool aids in inserting a connector into an RJ-45 socket, ensuring it’s inserted before crimping it in place with your jack plug crimping tool.
  3. Wire Strippers – These tools remove insulation from wire so you can strip away just enough metal so that your plug will fit securely on the end of it without being too loose or too tight.

RJ45 Crimping Steps

A crimp is a metal or plastic device that grips the wire tightly, preventing it from pulling out. We will be using a crimper to do this step.

1) Make sure you have the correct type of connector for the cable you are using.

2) Strip about 1⁄4 of insulation off each end of the cable (this leaves only about 1/8 at each end).

3) Put one of your wires into a channel in the crimper, with no metal parts exposed.

4) Squeeze down on the crimp until it is flush with both sides of the connector.

5) Repeat steps 2-4 for your other wire as well.
