Cannabidiol (CBD) has become a commonplace substance in many homes as people seek to improve their overall health and wellness. As such, dog owners who use CBD products may have wondered at one point or another whether it is safe to give their dogs some of their CBD oil. Cannabinoids from hemp can be tricky, which is why it’s so important to do your due diligence before giving your dog anything new and not natural in their diet. If you’ve considered giving CBD to your pet, let’s take a look at whether or not this is a good idea and why.

There’s no evidence to suggest CBD is necessarily bad.

Pet owners may assume that natural things are safe for their pets. However, the reality is that there are so many fruits, vegetables, and plants out there that can do more harm than good for a dog. Take, for example, cannabis. The primary chemical in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is poisonous to dogs. In fact, THC can cause disorientation, low temperature, nervousness, and vomiting. While it may not necessarily be lethal, it’s still not fun for your pup. Making sure that you avoid any products containing high doses of THC is crucial to your dog’s health.

That being said, there’s no evidence to suggest that CBD would have the same impact on pets, either in studies or anecdotally. If you do purchase dog CBD, whether you’re looking for the best CBD oil or dog treats, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Stick to low doses and low-potency products. It’s always better to give your dog small doses and move up from there to see how they respond rather than giving them doses that are too big.
  • Look for responsible CBD brands like Naternal if you’re looking to help your dog reap the benefits of CBD. Their oil and chews are made from organic hemp so that your dog doesn’t absorb toxins like heavy metals, pesticides, and herbicides. Additionally, they offer third-party lab testing so that you know exactly what’s in your hemp, and they’re transparent about these ingredients on their website, too.
  • Always speak with your veterinarian before you give your dog CBD. Your vet will be able to better help you understand CBD, how it may potentially affect your dog, and whether or not it’s right for them.

Remember, if you wouldn’t use the product, you definitely shouldn’t give it to your pet!

Does CBD work on dogs?

While more studies need to be conducted in order to understand what benefits are offered, CBD may likely have an impact on the endocannabinoid system. Mammals, including dogs, have endocannabinoid systems, which are a series of receptors that bind to chemicals produced by the body (endocannabinoids) to help us achieve homeostasis. Cannabinoids found in nature (phytocannabinoids) can be introduced to the body and may function similarly to endocannabinoids. This is why you feel high when you smoke marijuana. As you may have guessed, dogs have these same receptors and may be able to benefit from the same purported benefits that humans receive.

So, does CBD work on dogs? More research needs to be done, but it should function in the same way that it would with other mammals if they were to absorb cannabinoids from the hemp plant.

Dog CBD isn’t a bad idea, but it’s one you should approach with careful consideration. Make sure you speak with your vet, only buy high-quality CBD made for dogs that can be safely administered, and always start with a low dose to see how your dog responds before you give them any more.
