smart film

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Peel Properties of Bethesda, Md., has retained Commercial Window Shield for a smart film installation project in Rockville, Md.

The project involves installing smart film, also known as switchable film, on a glass conference room at 11200 Rockville Pike. A Peels tenant has requested the installation of the film in their office space.

The tenant is seeking privacy in its main glass conference room but also likes the versatility of switchable film because of its multiple uses.

Smart film is installed on interior glass and has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is on, the film remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the switch is off the film becomes opaque, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall. So with the simple flip of a light switch you can turn your office or conference room into a private workplace.

But beyond the privacy achievable with switchable film there’s a functionality element that adds a considerable benefit. Smart films are projectable, so they can be used as a display screen for viewing power point presentations, videos, whiteboards and other images.

Other benefits of smart or switchable film include its attractive appearance, which enhances the look of the office space. Smart film also blocks 98 percent of damaging UV rays protecting valuable artwork, furniture and carpet.

The project will begin June 7 and be completed on June 8.

Commercial Window Shield was retained for the switchable film installation project because of its considerable experience installing the film. Smart film must be precisely measured to fit the glass with no margin for error. Also, because the film contains electrical wires it takes considerable knowledge and skill to properly handle the film during the installation process.

The project is another example of Commercial Window Shield’s close working relationship with some of the country’s best-known construction and property management companies. The company has completed security, solar control, RF, smart, switchable and privacy window film projects for JBG Smith, Boston Properties, Gilbane Building Co., HITT and Davis Construction.

The company’s major focus in its nearly 40 years has been security and solar control window film installation. Its clients have included the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, O’Hare and Seattle international airports, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.
